Match the DUI Record to Your Task

To review your own DUI history, start with your state motor-vehicle agency for your driving record, use the court that handled the case for the case file or disposition, and use an FBI Identity History Summary only if you need the fingerprint-based criminal-history information maintained by the FBI. Those records overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Three record systems can answer three different DUI questions

A useful self-check starts by separating the driving record, the court case, and the fingerprint-based FBI summary.

Record Typical custodian Useful for May establish Does not replace
Driving record Your state DMV / MVD License and driving-history review What the state motor-vehicle record shows about your driving history and license record The court file or an FBI fingerprint-based summary
Court case record The state or local court that handled the case Confirming the filed case and its disposition The case docket, filings and final disposition available from that court A state driving record or nationwide FBI summary
FBI Identity History Summary FBI CJIS Personal review of fingerprint-based FBI criminal-history information Information in the FBI identity-history system associated with your fingerprints Your DMV record or every local/state court file

Pull the record that matches the question

More than one record is useful only when you have more than one question to answer.

Question you are trying to answer Check first Add this when needed
What appears in my driving history? State DMV/MVD driving record Court file if you also need to confirm how the case ended
What was the final court outcome? Court case record Driving record if you also need the motor-vehicle consequence
What fingerprint-based history does the FBI return to me? FBI Identity History Summary State driving/court records for state-specific detail

A practical way to check your own DUI-related records

Start with the narrowest official record that answers your question, then add another source only when it answers a different question.

  1. 01
Write down the event details you already know

State, approximate date, court or county if known, and any case number help you reach the right official system.

  2. 02
    Request your state driving record

Use your state motor-vehicle agency. USAGov provides the official state-by-state directory.

  3. 03
Confirm the court disposition when the outcome matters

Use the court that handled the case. The disposition answers a different question from the driving record.

  4. 04
Use the FBI personal-review process only for fingerprint-based FBI history

The FBI Identity History Summary requires fingerprints and currently carries an $18 request fee; it is a separate record product.

Compare records without treating them as interchangeable

A single DUI event can create records for different administrative and legal purposes. A driving record may matter when you are checking the history tied to a license, while the court file is the better source for the filed case and its disposition. The FBI summary is a personal fingerprint-based review of information maintained in FBI systems.

If the records appear inconsistent, compare the event date, jurisdiction and case identifiers before assuming one source is wrong. State access rules, retention periods and the information shown on a driving record vary, so the state motor-vehicle agency and the court that handled the case remain the authoritative next stops.

Do not treat arrest, record entry, and conviction as the same status
A DUI-related event may appear differently across motor-vehicle, court and criminal-history systems. Use the court disposition to determine how a filed case ended, and use the state motor-vehicle agency for the driving record tied to your license.
